Today is UN International Day of Rural Women!
Join us in celebrating the strong rural women of the world! As this fascinating FAO info graphic shows, women are the backbone of the rural economy, especially in developing countries.
There are thousands of Fairtrade female farmers around the world. Through Fairtrade they have a joint say in decision-making, and an equal share of the benefits.
Vida Addai is just one of these women. Vida is a cocoa farmer and member of Kuapa Kokoo cocoa Union in Ghana. With the Fairtrade Premium received for their cocoa, she and other members in her village chose to invest in a community borehole.
‘Since the borehole came, we are free from all water borne diseases,’ says Vida.
Across Fairtrade, women are joining forces to tackle gender equality, form their own cooperatives and tackle problems like poor healthcare and illiteracy. Read some case studies on Fairtrade Africa’s website.
